Why update a website? Part II

You have made the difficult decision to modernize your site, whether to reach new customers or to better serve existing ones and have allocated a modest budget to the goal. You present the budget to your technology partner and are met with an unexpected surprise: the budget is insufficient. Is the Developer looking to upsell or is there merit to their thinking?

There just maybe:

  1. Not every site can be "retrofitted" to meet a new goal (or improve on an existing one), technology develops rapidly and new demands are constantly placed on the online marketplace; can the site easily support mobile device browsing and app integration? Are there significant challenges with integrating Social Media into the existing site?
  2. Are the management tools of the existing site prohibitive of new elements being introduced? Is the backend highly restrictive?
  3. Will the ongoing SEO or Search Engine Optimization efforts be effected by the changes? If so, what impact could they have?

There are other points to consider as well and if the responses received do not seem reasonable, seek other opinions. There are many qualified companies that will be happy to review your options with you and put forward their suggestions. Above all, educate yourself and understand the business goals you are placing on your technology.

Very true. I think any web designing and development phase needs to be thoroughly planned before taking any major decisions.
