Send and receive your user@domain.com emails using Gmail

September 10, 2009

Below is the tutorial on how you can send and receive your user@domain.com emails using Gmail. This article relates to GoDaddy's dedicated and virtual dedicated servers. If you are hosting your website with a different hosting company, the technical information below, such as port numbers, may vary. Also, SMTP relaying should be enabled on the server. Just replace domain.com with your domain name and you're good to go!

1. To send messages from Gmail (your recipient will see user@domain.com in “From” field of received email):
- Login to your Gmail account;
- Click on “Settings” in the right top corner of the screen;
- Click on “Accounts” tab;
- Near “Send mail as:”, click on “Add another email address you own”;
- New window is going to open. Input your name and user@domain.com as your Email address. Click on Next Step;
- On next screen, select the second point “Send through domain.com SMTP servers”;
- More fields are going to appear. Input the information below into those fields:

  • SMTP Server: mail.domain.com
  • Port: 465
  • Username: user@domain.com
  • Password: *your password here*
  • Put a checkmark near “Always use a secure connection (SSL) when sending mail”

- Click on “Add Account”;
- Do not close that window and check your user@domain.com email. You should receive a confirmation email with an activation code. Enter this code in the window and click on “Verify”;
- The window is going to close and you can also put a checkmark near “Reply from the same address the message was sent to”;
- You can now send emails using your user@domain.com address from Gmail. You can also make it default.

2. To receive messages to your Gmail account from your user@domain.com address:
- On the same “Settings -> Account” page, near “Get mail from other accounts:” click on “Add a mail account you own”;
- New window is going to open. Input your user@domain.com address and click on “Next Step”;
- Enter the following information in the textfields:

  • Username: user@domain.com
  • Password: *your password here*
  • POP Server: mail.domain.com
  • Port: 995
  • Put a checkmark near “Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail”.

- You can also put a checkmark if you want to leave a copy of the messages on our server, label them in your Gmail account or archive them;
- Your user@domain.com email will be checked automatically and you will see your emails in your Gmail account.
